A jealous Milwaukee teenager, armed with a gun, entered his ex-girlfriend's home, raped her younger sister who was home alone, then gunned down his ex's new suitor when they arrived home, according to prosecutors.
A criminal complaint against Markell L. Greer details a series of incidents in which prosecutors say he first terrorized and raped a 15-year-old girl for more than 12 hours, shot a fleeing 30-year-old man in the back, then beat and confined three teens until they managed to escape after jumping Greer when he put his gun down.
Greer, 18, faces charges of first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree sexual assault of a child, armed robbery, kidnapping and substantial battery — 10 counts in all.
The complaint details scenes reminiscent of bad horror movies: A girl home alone who sees a shadow move in a hallway. Trying to lock a door against an enraged intruder. Threats of a triple execution. A gun kicked under a couch during a struggle.
But the outcomes were very real, according to prosecutors.
According to the complaint:
On Jan. 3, the older sister, 18, and her friend went to an overnight hotel party, leaving the younger sister at home in the 4500 block of N. 51st Blvd.
Around 7 p.m., the 15-year-old told police, she was watching television when she heard the floor creak. She got up and looked around the apartment but didn't turn all the lights on and didn't see anything. She returned to watching TV.
A few minutes later, she noticed a moving shadow, became scared and eventually called out, "Who is that?" before Greer, dressed in black and wearing a mask, rushed her, threw her to the floor and held her at gunpoint.
He demanded to know where her older sister was. The girl said she didn't know.
Greer then bound the girl's hands behind her back and over the next several hours raped her repeatedly and kept her in the apartment against her will.
The complaint doesn't indicate how or when Greer entered the apartment.
About 11 a.m. the next morning, the older sister, her new boyfriend and a female friend all arrived back at the apartment. Greer had positioned chairs to block the door.
As the older sister called out for the 15-year-old to let them in, the door finally opened, and the younger girl warned that, "Kell is here. He has a gun." Just then, Greer sprinted from a back room and into the stairwell where Nevelo Smith, the older sister's new boyfriend, was already fleeing.
Witnesses said Greer fired twice as Smith ran for the car that had just dropped them off, hitting him once in the back. Smith managed to crawl into the car, where a friend brought him to a hospital, where he died.
The sisters had followed Greer to the porch, then ran back upstairs and tried to lock him out, but Greer forced his way in. Greer told all three teens to get on their knees in the living room. He told them he had bullets for each of them and himself.
The older sister refused, and Greer then began pistol whipping her in the head.
Police responded quickly to the shooting, but Greer ordered three teens to remain silent in the bathroom. All later said they feared Greer would kill them if they made any sounds as police knocked at the apartment door.
About 20 minutes later, after police had left, Greer ordered the teens back to the living room. At one point, he put the gun down briefly and the older sister grabbed it. She later told police she tried to shoot Greer but couldn't make the gun, a revolver, fire.
When he attacked her to retrieve the gun, she and the other two wrestled with him. During the struggle, the older sister slid the gun under a couch. During the confusion, the victims all ran from the apartment.
One went to a neighbor's house and called 911. Police were on the scene in minutes and arrested Greer in the neighborhood after tracking him through the snow.
He is being held in the Milwaukee County Jail on $750,000 bail.
