A bronze bust of a Haitian-born fur trader who was dubbed the founder of Chicago has been defaced, according to the sculptor of the installation on the Magnificent Mile.
Artist Erik Blome said his assistant notified him Sunday morning that a black mask appeared to have been painted on the face of his sculpture of Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable. DuSable was the first non-indigenous settler to the Chicago area and was labeled the "founder of Chicago" by the state of Illinois in 1968.
It was unclear when the sculpture was defaced.
