A Rosemont police officer remains on leave Thursday after a shooting that left the officer’s brother-in-law dead.

The officer was off-duty when the shooting occurred late Wednesday morning in a gated community in the village. He has been placed on leave while the Illinois State Police investigate, according to a village press release.

Village spokesman Gary Mack confirmed that the officer is Rick Drehobl. The shooting victim, identified by village officials as Joseph Caffarello, 31, was the husband of Drehobl’s sister Deanna Caffarello. The village release said the shooting “appears to be a domestic related.”

Drehobl is the son of Village Clerk Debbie Drehobl and retired Rosemont police captain Richard Drehobl, Mack confirmed.
