Anne B. Mitrenga's husband's OBIT from Aug 1990:
WWII Veteran & Chicago Policeman Thaddeus Mitrenga, 68
Thaddeus ``Ted`` Mitrenga, 68, a retired Chicago police officer, was also a musician and a model builder. In 1984, after his retirement, he opened the Grand Hobby Shop.
A resident of the Big Oaks neighborhood on the Northwest Side, he died Wednesday at home.
Most of his 37 years as a patrolman were spent in the traffic division. He worked in the accident investigation division, on the street and, for the last 20 years, at Traffic Court at 321 N. LaSalle St.
In 1952, he was recognized by the department because he took a 4-year-old traffic victim to the hospital and regularly visited her there after the girl begged her mother to have the ``big policeman`` come again. When his captain learned of it, he gave Mr. Mitrenga a day off for his kindness.
Mr. Mitrenga served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and played trumpet in the Air Corps band. After his discharge, he worked for the transit system before joining the police force in 1947.
He built models of trains, planes and cars for many years. When he retired, he opened the hobby store on Grand Avenue west of Oak Park Avenue with his son, Walter.
``He loved to make people laugh,`` said his daughter, Janice Denega. ``He always found a joke or something humorous to say even in the worst of situations. He was also a very good musician. Aside from the trumpet, he also played the concertina and loved to play it with a group of his friends.``
Survivors, besides his son and daughter, include his wife, Anne; three other daughters, Sandra Specht, Judith Sadowski and Joyce Bueno; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister; and two brothers.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday in Casey-Laskowski and Sons Funeral Home, 4540 W. Diversey Ave.
Mass for Mr. Mitrenga will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Monica Catholic Church, Foster and Nottingham Avenues.
